An each-way bet is two bets in one: a win bet and a place bet. If your selection wins, both parts pay out. If it places (finishes in the top positions) but doesn’t win, only the place part pays. The place part pays at a fraction of the win odds.

This is the fraction of the win odds used to calculate place returns. At 1/4 odds, the place part pays at one quarter of the win odds. At 1/5 odds, it pays at one fifth. For example, with win odds of 10/1 at 1/4 the place odds are 10/4 = 5/2.

It depends on the event. Horse racing typically pays 2-4 places (more in handicap races). Bookmakers specify the number of places and the fraction for each event.

Each-way betting can be excellent value when you think a selection has a strong chance of placing but the win odds are high. Longshots with good place chances are ideal each-way selections, especially when place terms are generous.
